Military Training at Petawawa (1914–1918)

Established Role: Petawawa was already a military base before WWI, but the war rapidly expanded its importance. It became a key site for training Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) units before deployment to Europe.

Training Activities:

  • Infantry drills and live-fire exercises
  • Artillery training, including use of field guns and trench mortars
  • Engineering and logistics preparation, such as bridge-building and supply chain management
  • Tactical maneuvers in forested terrain, simulating battlefield condition
