Old Dutch Cleanser was introduced in 1905 by the Cudahy Packing Company as one of the earliest commercial scouring powders, revolutionizing household cleaning in North America.

-Cudahy Packing Company, a Chicago-based meatpacking firm, created Old Dutch Cleanser in 1905. The company was seeking ways to repurpose animal byproducts—specifically fat—for soap and cleaning agents. At the time, powdered cleansers were a novel concept. Old Dutch Cleanser was among the first to offer a gritty, soap-infused powder that could scrub surfaces clean, making it a household staple.

The brand featured a Dutch housewife wielding a stick to “drive away dirt,” playing on the stereotype of Dutch cleanliness. This image became iconic in advertising.
