Sol Hurok and Russian Ballet in America

Sol Hurok (1888–1974) was one of the most influential impresarios in the U.S., famous for introducing Russian ballet and international performers to American stages.

By the early 1940s, he was presenting seasons of ballet at major venues like the Metropolitan Opera House, often featuring companies such as the Ballet Theatre (later known as American Ballet Theatre).

These seasons were marketed as “Russian Ballet” to highlight the heritage and prestige of the dancers and repertoire, even though the Ballet Theatre was an American company with international influences
