Walter Ben Hare’s The Minstrel Encyclopedia (first published 1921) is one of the most comprehensive early‑20th‑century handbooks for staging amateur minstrel shows, offering scripts, character descriptions, makeup instructions, costuming guidance, and full “first parts” and afterpieces.
Although their professional peak had passed by 1910, minstrel shows remained common in amateur, community, and fraternal settings throughout the 1920s, including schools, churches, civic groups, and youth organizations. Their format, racial stereotypes, and performance conventions were largely unchanged from the 19th century.
