William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. He is best remembered for leading the nation during the Spanish–American War and overseeing a period of American expansionism.

McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901, at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. He died eight days later from gangrene caused by his wounds. His death elevated Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency, ushering in a new era of progressive reforms. McKinley is remembered as a transitional figure: bridging the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, and setting the stage for America’s global role in the 20th century.

McKinley’s presidency marked a turning point in U.S. history. His policies strengthened American industry, while his foreign policy decisions expanded U.S. influence overseas. Though overshadowed by Roosevelt, McKinley’s leadership during a critical moment of economic recovery and international conflict shaped the trajectory of modern America.
