Large-size hand-colored map of Canaan before its conquest by the Israelites. Created by Willem Bachiene, engraved by J. van Jagen, and published by Nicolaas Goetzee, for a Dutch Bible.

Taken from Dutch Bible ‘Bybel, dat is, de gansche H. Schrift, Vervattende alle de Kanonyke Boeken des Ouder Nieuwen Testaments…’ This Bible was dedicated to the Prince of Orange and Nassau.

Area covered extends as far as the Nile Delta and well east of the Jordan. Shows different 'lands': Amalekites, Canaan, Edomites, Ammonites, etc..

Cartouche LR corner with Moses prostrate before the burning bush, God looking down.

Title in cartouche UL: ‘Afbeelding van T. Land Kanaan…door W.A. Bachiene V. D. M. te Kuilenburg Uitgegeven Gorinchem, by NICOLAAS GOETZEE Ordinairis Stadsdrukker 1748 (title, creator, publisher). Publisher was Nicolaas Goetzee, Gorinchem Netherlands.

In lower left margin, the name of the person who engraved the map: ‘J. van Jagen Sculp. 1747’.  Van Jagen was a prominent Dutch engraver.

In upper middle and right margin: ‘N. II' and Deze Kaart in den Bybel te plaatzen by Gen:XV’ (number and placement in Bible).

Vertical folds for placing in Bible. Other vertical creases. Toning along edges. Stain LL.
