Father Damien (Jozef “Joseph” De Veuster, 1840–1889) was a Belgian Catholic priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.CC.) who became world‑renowned for his work among people with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) on Molokai, Hawaiʻi. He is the single most important figure associated with the Molokai settlements and is often the reason people mistakenly imagine a “French leper colony” there.

Beatified 1995 and canonized 11 October 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI.  Patron saint of people with leprosy and those who care for the marginalized.  His relics are preserved in Leuven, Belgium, with a relic of his hand at Molokai.
