This wasone of the most visually striking moments of Roosevelt’s 1911 Pacific Northwest tour — his address at Stadium High School’s Stadium Bowl in Tacoma, Washington, delivered before an enormous crowd estimated at 40,000 people.
This event is well‑documented in period postcards and archival collections, which consistently describe Roosevelt speaking from a platform on the field with the massive bowl and the castle‑like high school rising behind him.
Roosevelt’s 1911 western tour was part of his re‑emergence on the national stage after his African safari and European travels. By the time he reached Tacoma, he was already being urged to run again for president — and the massive turnout at Stadium Bowl reflected his enduring popularity
Stadium High School’s bowl, carved dramatically into the hillside above Commencement Bay, was already one of the most impressive outdoor venues in the Pacific Northwest. Contemporary newspapers described the Roosevelt event as a “magnificent scene in the city’s great stadium”, with crowds filling every tier and lining the rim above.
