World War I transformed Arras from a thriving historic city into one of France’s most devastated urban battlefields. The city endured occupation, bombardment, trench warfare on its doorstep, and near‑total destruction of its architectural heritage.
In August 1917, the Arras sector was in a tense, violent “holding phase” after the major Battle of Arras (April–May 1917). Although the big offensive had ended, the front around Arras remained extremely active with raids, artillery duels, aerial combat, and consolidation of positions.
