Joseph “Cheap John” Cunha was born in Pernambuco, Brazil, a city with strong ties to New Bedford. He first sold cigars from a small store on Union Street. Successful, he moved to larger quarters where he sold various types of tobacco and related sundries. He built an addition to the store and added a billiard and pool room. A costume department in the back outfitted those going to fancy balls and masquerades.
