Two pre-Civil War illustrated envelopes. One with image representing the State of Alabama, the second with image and slogan for Stephen Douglas who ran against Abraham Lincoln to eb the 1860 Democratic presidential nominee.

Depicts a closeup of a gnarled tree trunk with a large "Map of Alabama" pinned against it. Part of series printed by‘Magee, 316 Chestnut St Phil’a’.Although undated, this presumably was published pre-1861.

Stephen Arnold Douglas (1813 –1861) was an American politician and lawyer from Illinois. He was one of two Democratic Party nominees for president in the 1860 presidential election, which was won by Abraham Lincoln. Douglas had previously defeated Lincoln in the 1858 United States Senate election in Illinois. During the 1850s, Douglas was one of the foremost advocates of popular sovereignty, which held that each territory should be allowed to determine whether to permit slavery within its borders.
