I have what I believe is an late 18th century, early 19th oil on canvas. It was purchased in France.
When I bought it, there was a tear to the left of the head and it was just the canvas. I had a conservator repair the painting, clean it, re-varnish, and do a relining and stretch of the canvas. Finally, it was professionally framed.
I think it may be St Joseph, St. Jerome or John the Baptist.
It is unsigned. When purchased I was told it could possible be a work by Joseph-Marie Vien. He was the last holder of the post of ‘Premier peintre du Roi’ (First Painter of the King - France), serving from 1789 to 1791.
I’ve compared this to others by him and I believe there is a similarity, but that is strictly an opinion.
